Can You Paint Over Intumescent Fireproofing? SBC and NFPA Requirements

A topcoat can go over intumescent fireproofing, but only one that is part of, or approved for, the tested and listed coating system. Neither the SBC nor NFPA gives blanket permission for ordinary decorative paint, and neither bans all topcoats.

Under SBC 201-CR-2024 §703.2.1.4 (formerly §703.2.4 in the 2018 edition), any material not tested as part of the rated assembly needs supporting data showing the fire-resistance rating is not reduced. Without accepted fire-test, listing or engineering evidence, the extra coat should not be accepted.

NFPA 5000-2024 §8.2.1.1 requires ratings to be established by ASTM E119, UL 263, approved tests or permitted calculation methods, and Annex A.8.2.1.1 explains that intumescent materials must be installed and inspected to the listed design and the manufacturer's instructions for the complete system.
