IG-55 Inert Gas Suppression System – Design & Installation Learning Series (Parts 1–9)
We've put together a 9-part learning series on IG-55 (50% nitrogen / 50% argon) total-flooding systems, from first principles to handover and maintenance. One worked example, a 328 m³ server room, runs through the whole series, and we checked every number in it with a script.
1. Introduction & Components: what IG-55 is, applications, advantages, limitations, typical components (80/140 L cylinders, 200/300 bar, actuation, selector valves, pressure reduction)
2. Principle & Safety: oxygen dilution, design concentrations (NFPA 2001 / ISO 14520-14), NOAEL/LOAEL, exposure limits
3. Agent Quantity: the NFPA 2001 flooding equation, specific volume, our flooding-factor table, temperature and altitude
4. Cylinders & Manifold: 258.0 kg needed, cylinder options compared, 5 × 140 L / 300 bar chosen, actual concentration checked, manifold layout
5. Piping & Discharge: pressure path, restrictor, 60 s / 120 s discharge times, nozzles, listed hydraulic software
6. Detection & Release: cross-zoning, release sequence, cause-and-effect matrix, abort, manual release, signs
7. Room Integrity & Venting: 10-minute hold time, door-fan test, over-pressure vent sizing concept
8. Install & Commission: site checklist, acceptance tests, handover documents
9. Inspection & Maintenance: NFPA 2001 schedule, reading gauges against temperature, common faults, safety
Cylinder fill quantities shown are typical published values. Always use the listed system's design manual and software.
Summary only. Refer to NFPA 2001 / ISO 14520, the manufacturer and the AHJ.
