FK-5-1-12 Clean Agent System – Introduction Series (Parts 1–6)
We've put together a 6-part introduction to FK-5-1-12 (fluoroketone) total-flooding clean agent systems. It is fully generic and based on NFPA 2001 (2025) and ISO 14520-5:2024. One worked example, a 200 m³ electrical room, runs through Parts 4 and 6, and we checked it with a script.
1. What Is FK-5-1-12?: a fluoroketone, liquid at room temperature (49.2 °C boiling point), works mainly by heat absorption; applications, advantages, limits
2. Safety & Environment: NOAEL 10 % vs 4.5–5.9 % design, ODP 0, GWP about 1, lifetime about 5 days, HF, PFAS regulation status (neutral)
3. System Components: cylinders, nitrogen superpressurisation (25 / 34 / 42 / 50 / 60 bar ratings), valves, actuators, manifold, pipe, nozzles, detection and release panel
4. Design Basics: W = (V/S)·C/(100−C), S = 0.0664 + 0.0002741·T, design concentrations, 10 s discharge, 10 min hold, altitude; 200 m³ room → 131.1 kg
5. Install & Commission: listed flow software, nozzle placement, door-fan test, labelling, abort / manual release, acceptance tests, handover
6. Inspection & Maintenance: NFPA 2001 Chapter 11 schedule (5 % weight / 10 % pressure), hoses, room integrity reviews, FK-5-1-12 vs IG-55 vs CO₂
Design concentrations shown are the informative NFPA 2001 annex and ISO 14520-5 values. Always use the listed system's design manual and flow software.
Summary only. Refer to NFPA 2001 / ISO 14520, the manufacturer and the AHJ.
